Lucinda’s Spell is a charming little independent movie from bizzare director Jon Jacobs (who wrote/directed/starred in this and the previous “Girl with the Hungry Eyes”). Set in decadent New Orleans, on the eve of Beltain (pagans’ “sacred night of love”), Jason the First Horn has come to couple with the most powerful witch. He encounters a coven of witches who would do anything at the chance to have sex with him. A group of women fighting over one guy? Sounds like every man’s fantasy. But director Jacobs has turned the fantasy into a nightmare! In the middle of all this is Luicnda Bale (Christina Fulton, also from “Girl with the Hungry Eyes”), white witch and working girl who must overcome her self esteem in order to win and get back the son she thought she lost.

All in all, this was a pretty good film. I gave it only four stars because there was no director commentary. DVDs need commentary and it would have been nice to hear how Jon Jacobs put together this independent movie. See this movie!

Just when I thought I had seen everything…. I sat down to watch this wee beauty. Shot in fabulous widescreen, it’s colorful, witty and unpredictable. Christina Fulton is a Riot and Jon Jacobs has gotta be the ballsiest guy in Hollywood to direct and star in this satire on sex. Do I recommend it? It’s my new favorite movie. …. Oh and I found the official website at www.sexismagic.com .. more interesting stuff there.

Beautiful. Exquisite. Captivating. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe the quality of Barbie’s first, and hopefully not last, movie. I bought this for my daughter thinking that it would be fun video for her to watch (Barbie lover that she is at 2 1/2) as the holidays approach. I didn’t expect to fall in love with it myself. In amazing computer animation, the Nutcracker is retold through the eyes of Barbie playing both the roles of Clara and the Sugarplum Princess. The story is strong, with lots of action and tenderness: the plotline includes, of course, Prince Eric as the Nutcracker, the Mouse King and his legions, and lots of adorable sugarplum fairies. The dance sequences will take your breath away as the graphics artists have integrated actual footage of the dancing of the New York City Ballet into their computer animated scenes. I only wish there had been more of them, but I will take quality over quantity! A few of the scenes were a little rough for my 2-year old, but really no worse than a Disney movie. Even if you’re not a fan of Barbie, pick up this movie for its sheer storytelling and visual value. All in all, I have to say that this is destined to become a favorite for girls (including us moms!) of all ages.

I never liked Babie, not even as a kid but I always enjoyed The Nutcracker. Being tired of watching a total musical, I was shocked to find that this video was more of a movie with a plot rather then all the charactors hopping up and down all over the picture. I love how the viewer watches as the Nutcracker and Clara bond closer as the movie Progresses. The animation is almost as good as Toy Story (Main Frame that made Barbie Nutcracker are the guys that made that computer series Reboot) But the best animation has to be the Mouse King and Pimm. Tim Curry did an excellent role playing the regal rodent and I would say that little purple bat is the cutest charactor not to mention great comic relief to the story (it’s so cute when Pimm whispers as the mouse king is holdng him upside down by his feet “Sire I can’t feel my toes” and he gives them a little wiggle, Just makes you want to squeeze him! Also the highlight is when Prince Eric and Clara dance together at the end, very realistic. As a major Barbie hater to enjoy a movie with the pink wearing doll as the star must be good!

The show is great, fun to watch with great food ideas. But where is eposide 2 on the first disic. It lisits 1 an 3. Problems….??????

Gordon Ramsay brings cooking home with involving his children and wife through actually catching and raising the meat that he wants to use. There are always fresh markets he travels to for choosing so many various fresh ingredients, however, I enjoy watching him working with his family at raising and catching fresh meats. My son has Crohn’s disease and I have to be careful to choose and find the properly raised meats for him. This is an inspiration to us.

Ah! My Goddess is a wildly popular series that started life out as a manga before making the jump to anime. A 5 episode OVA series was released in the early 90s as was a motion picture. Now US distributor Media Blasters releases stateside the 26 episode television series that aired last season in Japan.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ah! My Goddess - Always and Forever! Click Here

The series stay very true to the long running manga. For the uninitiated, Ah! My Goddess tells the comedic story of young Morisato, a struggling college kid trying to survive his schoolwork and at times his roommates. One day while trying to order takeout food he dials the wrong number and gets the Goddess Helpline. Enter beautiful and sweet Goddess Belldandy. Belldandy grants his wish which is that she stays with him. This simple action sets up a series of comedic and sometimes touching events as the two characters budding romance takes off. Morisato moves into his own place which gradually gets crowded thanks to Belldandy’s relatives coming to crash and sometimes live. This anime has harem show elements but stays away from fan service, prefering to focus on the romantic/comedic events of the character’s lives.

The latest TV series is really a visual treat. The character designs are a bit more angular compared to the original OVA series but the animation is fluid and the colours are truly brilliant. Musically the opening and closing themes are catchy. For voice actor fans the entire original Japanese cast has been brought back to reprise their roles. For dub fans Media Blasters brings on board a great English crew who do a great job of capturing the character’s spirits.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ah! My Goddess - Always and Forever! Click Here

The collector’s box includes volume one and a cell/ Ketai phone strap for fans as well as the attractive artbox itself.

Ah! my Goddess is a fun and entertaining series that shouldnt be missed by any anime fan. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

This is the Ah! My Godess the TV series originally aired in Japan in 2005. This series pretty much follows the manga. What happens when a college student wishes a Goddess to live with him forever? You get to see the fateful meeting of Belldandy and Keiichi in the first episode, then follow their adventures with friends and enemies, and finally reach the climatic ending with the Terrible Master story arc in the manga.

The TV series was originally aired in Japan in a cropped, 4:3 format. The Media Blasters release is in the original 16:9 format, just like the Region 2 DVD.

The box set edition consists of volume 1 DVD in a collector’s box, and a Belldandy cell phone strap imported from Japan.

It was about midnight in a hotel room on a business trip that I was flipping channels and came across this documentary and was immediately sucked in. It’s just a fascinating story about an off-beat topic that most people have never heard about. I was so fascinated by it that I researched the PBS site until I found the producers name and contacted him to see when it would be on DVD (I never do that!).

Well, that was about a year ago, here it is, and I can’t wait to see it with all the extras. If you are a fan of oddball documentaries in the vein of ‘American Movie’, ‘The Checker King’, or ‘Cane Toads’, then this one is for you.

Have you ever heard of Caglar Juan Singletary (the man behind the song `Non-Violent Taekwondo Troopers’)? No? How about Nilson V. Ortiz (The Thing), or Gary Forney (Chicken Insurrection)? Probably not…should you know these individuals? Not unless you’re kin…so why am I bringing them up? Well, I think many of us have seen the tiny, little ads in magazines (usually in the back), tabloids, or comic books that entice readers to send in poems and have them translated into songs, with the inference of possibly entering the music business and/or reaping the accompanying rewards (be they in the form of recognition or financial, or both) only to dismiss them as scams and wonder just what kind of people fall for such foolishness? Well, the three I mentioned earlier are individuals who responded to such ads at one point or another, and have all had their words transmogrified into songs, for better or for worse…

Buy,Download, Or Stream Off the Charts: The Song-Poem Story! Click Here

In the documentary Off the Charts: The Song-Poem Story (2003), Jamie Meltzer allows us a glimpse behind those ads I mentioned previously, detailing not only those with aspirations of having their words transformed into songs, but also those craftsmen who take on the responsibility turning someone’s dreams into a vinyl reality, for a price, of course…as the film begins, Meltzer examines this rather extensive subculture, focusing on a relatively small, eclectic group within the whole, specifically the more inspired (or demented, depending on your view) elements. How it actually works is you would send in your poem to the advertisement listed, and they would respond telling you they will take your poem and turn it into a professionally produced song, complete with singer and musical accompaniment. All you have to do is send in some cash…and it’s usually not a meager sum, but then what price can you put on stardom? Once the cash was received, the work would begin, and a record produced, with a copy of going back to you.

While watching this documentary, I think what surprised me most was seeing the level of professionalism and seriousness displayed by the individuals or companies who turn these submissions into music. They weren’t especially high tech, and usually worked alone out of their homes, but they didn’t appear to be in the business of scamming or fleecing these people of their money (although I’m sure some are). They truly seemed interested in providing what they advertised, despite the quality of the material they often received, and believe me, there is a level of awfulness that goes beyond comprehension (this seems sort of an absurd aspect, to have accomplished musicians work with generally such amateurish material). There was a very creepy element about some of these individuals who submitted their works, but you won’t be able to deny the sincerity in their desires. They didn’t appear to have delusions about stardom, but only wished to hear their words in a format that could be enjoyed by others…and as creepy as some of these people may seem, they really can’t compare to those who actually collect this material, those who scrounge, scavenge, and pontificate the virtues of said music…these guys probably scared me the most (probably because I could identify with them more than anyone else in the film). I think the part I liked the most was when we saw, in a split screen, the artist performing a song, and the person who wrote the poem hearing the song for the first time. It’s funny how these original writers react to hearing the songs created from their words, especially when they get something not quite what they expected. The film closes with one individual, now that he has his words translated into to music, deciding it’s time to take his music to the people, and he and his son go on tour (all of one stop…you gotta start somewhere).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Off the Charts: The Song-Poem Story! Click Here

The actual documentary lasts about an hour, and the rest is made up of a plethora of special features including a director and producer commentary track, Sunburst Studio sessions (featuring the recording of six songs), deleted scenes (7 in all), a feature called the Iowa Mountain Tour, Live!, `Off the Charts’ premiere party, Columbine Records Presents `America Sing!’(a variety TV show featuring a number of songs), and a song-poem advertisement gallery with commentary. If you enjoy this, I would also recommend the book/CD combo Songs in the Key of Z: The Curious Universe of Outsider Music (I think someone already mentioned it), and another film titled Driver 23/Atlas Moth (2002), which doesn’t so much pertain to `outsider’ music, but is a great film about one mans dedication to his craft and the lengths to which he goes through in following his dreams.

I’ve always loved animals. As a “dog person”, wolves have always been close to my heart. I’ve admired their intelligence, free spirit, family bonds and the fact that they mate for life. I’ve read books about them and watched many documentaries. This film has truly touched my soul. It is an intimate portrait and allows you to peek into their daily life and witness the true nature of this amazing animal. The second video (Wolves at our door) in this DVD set is basically a form of cliff notes, but I didn’t mind watching both over and over again ;)

I purchase this for my Father, for his Birthday. When I told Mom I was sending it, she said he already had it and they’s watched it a few times…they really enjoyed it! My Dad has a real love and sense of connection to wolves.

So, darn, I had to keep it (rather than return it). It is wonderful, amazing and wonderful. Good for all ages.

MOVIE: Edward Zwick’s films always strike a good chord with me because of their incredible emotional impact. The Last Samurai left such a grand impact on me that I was in tears at its incredible and emotional climax. The Blood Diamond does the same thing by establishing strong central characters with a clear objective that makes the film gripping and tense. The story revolves around Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) a local fisherman whose village is raided by local militia who are at civil war over the control over the diamond fields. These events took place in the late 90’s and it serves as the backdrop of the film. Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a Rhodesian smuggler who works for a corporate diamond company in London he also works as a mercenary. He smuggles diamonds to the corporations so that they can remove them off of the market thus keeping supply low and demand high, that way they spike the prices. After Vendi is removed from his village and his family separated, he is put to work in the diamond fields where he comes across a pink diamond so rare that it could change the fate of not only his life but a nation’s. Vandy is able to escape his imprisonment by the rebels but is put in prison by the police, and in prison he meets Danny Archer who now wants to set his sights on the hidden diamond. When Archer meets Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), an American journalist, she believes that his story holds the key to revealing the truth behind the diamond corporations. When Vandy’s son is recruited by the rebels he sets out on a quest to find his son while Archer wants the diamond so that he can leave Africa and start his troubled life over. Arnold Vosloo plays a general who is also after the diamond. So we have four people after one small stone for four different reasons.

The film has many sides to it. At times it’s a dark look into the social and economical conflicts of Africa, sometimes it becomes a burning commentary on the nature of man, but overall this film is an intimate story of three characters placed within the setting. The main objective of the film is to tell the story of the characters where as in films like Tears Of The Sun or Black Hawk Down it’s more about sending a central message. I’m not saying the latter films are bad, I enjoyed Tears Of The Suns and Black Hawk Down immensely. I’m also not saying that Blood Diamond is not trying to send a central message either. It’s just that Blood Diamond really tries to tell a story, just like Zwick did with The Last Samurai. While the film portrayed a civil struggle in Japan it was more focused on Tom Cruise’s and Ken Watanabe’s characters so that when tragedy struck it had a strong emotional impact on the audience. Blood Diamond is not only emotional but it’s incredibly tense and thrilling. There is lots of action in the film and the final air raid was executed perfectly. The story is solid and the film is an immense accomplishment. The reason why I knocked off half a star from my final rating was that I had two minor problems with the movie. There were places where a few tweaks could have heightened the emotional impact of the film and have kept the pace of the film more consistent. However, it is whithout a doubt that the film was superbly edited. The pace and structure were very consistant and strong. I was pleased by the script, Charles Leavitt did a fine job with the screenplay even though he has taken a long break from writing since his last effort with K-Pax. The second thing that bothered me was that once the movie ends and the credits start to roll we are hit with this hardcore rap song. I was absolutely shocked and disapointed with the decision to use rap in the end credits, it ruined the lasting effect of the film within a split second.

The film also displays some incredible artistic efforts. The cinematography is absolutely stunning. There is a very good chance that Eduardo Serra should be one of the directors of photography nominated this year at the Oscars. Some of the shots were truly breathtaking and of course you have to give credit to beautiful landscapes of Africa. The film’s score was composed by James Newton Howard who relied heavily on African vocals for the amazing score. I have to mention here that Hans Zimmer is the pioneer of incorporating native sounds into a film’s score based on location. Zimmer made African vocals his speciality with films like A World Apart, The Power Of One, The Lion King, and Tears Of The Sun. You have to acknowledge the Zimmer style in the score, but James Newton Howard makes it completely his own and delivers an amazing score. There were scenes where I wished the score was more prominent, but overall I was very happy with the musical efforts. All of the artistic efforts put together with the story make Blood Diamond what it is.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Blood Diamond! Click Here

ACTING: Does Leonardo DiCaprio give his best performance yet? In my opinion I really think so. He was amazing in the film and created a perfectly accessible character that we cared for. Many people are criticizing his accent when in fact he is using an extremely authentic Rhodesian accent. People assume that since he is white and an African he must be South African. That’s not the case here, people. DiCaprio does an amazing job with the role. Djimon Hounsou is also equally amazing in the film. There are a few intimate scenes with his son that will bring you to tears. He plays an uneducated fisherman with his only interests in his family, but it is his character that shows the good of mankind in the middle of this mess. Jennifer Connelly is a great actress and she portrays a journalist just as a journalist would act. She uses her wits and looks to get the story, but her priorities are not to make headlines but rather to help change the world for the better. Arnold Vosloo has a small role in the film, but I like him and think he’s an underrated actor. People will recognize him from The Mummy films and his guest role on the show 24. The acting in this film is superb, the characters all carry the film and make it something to remember.

BOTTOM LINE: Blood Diamond is gripping, thrilling and emotional. I shed some tears when I saw The Last Samurai and I indeed shed some tears when I saw Blood Diamond. It’s an action film with so much substance, it really pulls you in as an audience member. The few structural problems and the rap song at the end credits are not enough for me not to highly recomend this film.

Greed is the dark heart of “Blood Diamond,” director Edward Zwick’s (”The Last Samurai”) uncompromising look into the underground trafficking of illegally-traded gems in sub-Saharan Africa. Greed of corrupt men for power, greed of an amoral mercenary willing to sacrifice anything for a chance to escape Africa, greed of Western businessmen who seek to artificially control the diamond market, and the greed of a simple man for his family’s return. This movie powerfully demonstrates the valuelessness of a human life to those persons obsessed with blood diamond collection in war-ravaged Sierra Leone.

Djimon Hounsou plays Solomon Vandy, a simple fisherman and father of two who witnesses his idyllic existence crumble before his eyes. Rebels seeking new recruits, slaves, and random carnage swarm into his village. They select his adolescent son and other young men as future cadets in their guerilla army–following suitable brainwashing and manipulation techniques–before then getting down to the real business of slave collection. Seemingly devoid of any mental workings besides casual sadism, these bandits top-off their kidnapping and slave-taking exercise with the mutilation and execution of men deemed too troublesome for them to bother with. Vandy is rescued from dismemberment at the last minute when the rebels recognize his strength, seeing it as an asset they can utilize in their constant search for capital: the blood diamond pits. Condemned to toiling underneath the blazing sun with nary a chance of reaping any benefit (besides possible continued survival) for his efforts, Vandy happens to discover an egg-sized blood diamond hidden in the streambed. Hiding it underneath his foot, he buries it when the rebel encampment is attacked by government troops. The only witness to his “theft” is the wounded slave captain–now captured, along with Vandy, by government forces–who swears that the former fisherman will soon be begging to reveal the diamond’s whereabouts.

Parallel to Djimon’s character’s storyline is the tale of Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio), an opportunistic solider of fortune caught within a dichotomy of conflicting motivation. He desires escape from Africa at any cost, yet secretly knows that his blood will someday mix with the earth of his homeland. Perhaps it is this realization that he is doomed which propels Archer forward: in every action and every word, he seems to be daring destiny to obliterate him. Taken in and trained from a young age by Colonel Coetzee (Arnold Vosloo), Archer is easily the most dangerous entity alive on the continent: ruthless, misanthropic, callous, manipulative, and incredibly lethal with bullet and blade. After a close-call haggling with rebel leaders over fair prices for blood diamonds, Archer is arrested for smuggling while crossing the Sierra Leone border. It is here that he intercepts the distraught Vandy and begins weaving a plan to save himself from the war-torn country: by dangling the freedom of the fisherman’s family as bait to cajole Vandy into revealing the gigantic diamond’s location. Solomon, though a simple man, is not so easily fooled. He eventually agrees to help Archer–but only if the mercenary agrees to help locate his family and also permit Solomon to be his travel companion.

There is barely time for indrawn breath during the watching of this movie. Action sequences are furious, brutal, and frequent. The pace of the movie is frenetic. The score is perfect throughout. The “education” of Vandy’s son by the rebels is heart-wrenching. Solomon’s overarching belief that fatherhood trumps all initially feels naïve, but is eventually revealed to be the singularly most powerful force in the entire movie. Danny’s character–the realist mercenary who seems most capable of surviving, when compared to Vandy–shows the most evolution, shedding layers of the personality onion until an actual human appears. He is moved to reveal an element of his past to the beautiful American reporter (Jennifer Connelly), whose persistence and mutual survivorship cements a bond they both were too proud to admit from their first meeting. Archer and Vandy relationship morphs into something beautiful when a sacrifice is needed, prompting Solomon to reverse that remarkably chauvinistic statement made by Rudyard Kipling over one hundred years ago: the “white man’s burden.”

This is hands-down Djimon’s most impressive performance: I have never seen him better represent a character. In fact, he blurs the line between character and actor, totally suspending my disbelief to the point where I “knew” him only as Vandy. I have been told by an acquaintance–currently living in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia)–that DiCaprio’s accent is spot-on. In addition, he was utterly believable as heartless mercenary, and his later transformation was also quite convincing. The action sequences were, as mentioned, jaw-dropping in their intensity, but never felt gratuitous or over-the-top.

Easily one of my five favorite movies of 2006–miss it, and you risk missing some of the finest cinematographic wizardry and directorial finesse of cinema from the last year, period.

This is not a review of a legendary concert appearance by Leonard Cohen.

It’s a meditation on personal power. His. Yours. Mine.

Essentially, I’m trying to figure out here what happens below the surface of your life so you can — how you access your power for career advancement, personal gain and, not least, the good of the world.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Isle of Wight! Click Here

But to do that, I have to tell you a Leonard Cohen story and urge you to watch a 64-minute documentary.

Here’s the story.

In l967, 32-year-old Leonard Cohen — a novelist and poet who was just starting out as a singer/songwriter — walked onstage at Carnegie Hall, looked out at the audience, and started shaking. “I can’t do this,” he said, and left the stage. In the wings, Judy Collins took his hand, led him in front of the audience again and sang “Suzanne” with him.

In 1970, 35-year-old Leonard Cohen agreed to perform at England’s Isle of Wight music festival. It was not a happy event. Angered that there was a wall to keep out those who hadn’t paid, some of the young festivalgoers rebelled. They tore down fences. They crashed the gates. There were fires and fights. There was garbage.

600,000 people. Living outside. For almost five days.

At 2 in the morning of the fifth and final day, Leonard Cohen was awakened and asked to hurry onstage. There was no piano, no organ. Cohen, in his pajamas, insisted on both. And then he went back to his trailer to get dressed.

At 4 in the morning, Cohen took the stage. He looked into the darkness and, gently, slowly, told a story of going to the circus as a kid and liking only the moment when the audience lit matches in the darkness. He asked the crowd to light matches, and he waited while they did, and then he sang “Bird on a Wire.”

And he owned that crowd. He held 600,000 souls in the palm of his hand, and he brought them his brave, sad songs, and they listened to him as if he were a prophet.

This amazing footage is the start of the 64-minute concert DVD that is half of the package. (The other half is a CD of Cohen’s performance. If you are a Leonard Cohen fan, it’s of minor interest; if you’re new to Cohen, it’s even less interesting.)

Here’s my question: On that stage, Leonard Cohen was in a state of calm beyond calm. What occurred in those three years to give him that outrageous certainty in himself? How did the transformation occur?

And then, to make it personal, can I do that? Can you?

I can only hazard a guess here. But it strikes me that, at Carnegie Hall, Cohen stuck a toe in the water of live performance. And he saw that it didn’t kill him, that it pleased him and raised him up, bringing him closer to the self he imagined. And he followed it with another step, and another, until 600,000 people were no big deal.

That’s a very crude formulation. It doesn’t deal at all with doubts and fears, with backsliding; it makes Cohen into a mythic figure, a terminator, resolutely moving forward. I doubt it happened that smoothly for him. I suspect there was a lot of determination involved, and picking himself up when he faltered. But I think the steadiness of the effort served him well — after a while, he was in a new place, and when he looked back, he didn’t recognize his old, fearful self.

It’s what Anne Lamott writes in “Bird by Bird”. Her brother had to write a school report about birds. The kid couldn’t figure out a way to do it. But their father did. “Bird by bird, buddy,” he said.

You want to see how far you can get if you keep at it? Look at “Leonard Cohen Live in London”, captured last year, when Cohen was 75. Or just go to the music. What you get is the same thing again and again — Cohen pays total attention, he’s completely in the moment, and soon you are. He tunes you, just as he tuned the 600,000 in 1970s.

One of the mottoes of the Texas Rangers is this: “Little man whip a big man every time if the little man’s in the right and keeps on coming.” I have trouble believing that; the streets of history are littered with the corpses of little men who didn’t grasp how cruel the powerful can be. But I think Cohen believes it, and I think that simple belief made the difference. And in watching his remarkable 1970 performance, I do rediscover my courage.

Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Murray Lerner has unearthed quite a gem in making this film featuring Leonard Cohen’s mesmerizing Isle of Wight performance from 1970. The 64-minute film deftly weaves modern interviews from relevant performers and associates of Leonard Cohen with the vintage musical performance by Cohen and his band, the affectionately named “Army” comprised of such stalwarts as legendary music producer Bob Johnston.

The audio quality is a sonic revelation, obliterating my expectations for a live multi-track recording from 1970 staged in front of 600,000 fans that had gotten rowdier as the festival progressed. Jimi Hendrix had performed his set before Cohen, with the crowd setting various things on fire like a piano and the scaffolding surrounding the stage. But the music was not to be denied, as Leonard Cohen slowly took the stage after they found a replacement piano and organ.

At 4 a.m. on August 31, 1970, the man introduced to the crowd as “a novelist, a poet, an author, a singer”, began his intimate performance that encompassed most of the hits that had earned him acclaim, from “Bird On the Wire” to “Suzanne” and other well-known songs mainly from his first two albums. A nice surprise are the short stories Cohen shares and poem fragments he uses to introduce many of the songs. The crowd, who had booed previous performers like Kris Kristofferson, sat in rapt attention to the mostly acoustic set. My only quibble is that the complete audio performance by Leonard Cohen is not included on the Blu-ray. The CD version includes a couple of songs not shown in the documentary. I have no idea if the footage simply did not exist or was simply left out at the director’s discretion.

The Blu-ray, on a single BD-25, is transferred from the original 16mm camera negative to 1080i. This is not footage that is going to blow viewers away by its visual quality. In fact on an absolute basis, the BD is well below the norm expected for high-definition titles. Prepare for an experience of limited visual quality. It is true that this Blu-ray replicates as closely as possible the 16mm film source the concert was shot in. The modern interviews, with such luminaries as Judy Collins and Joan Baez, are all in excellent picture quality, but do remind the viewer of the inherent limitations in the concert footage. Still, it looks like much of the other concert footage I have seen from the era on the Blu-ray format. The only notable defect is the continual appearance of an ultra-thin vertical black line that runs down the middle of the camera image on tight close-ups of Leonard Cohen. It looks to be the result of a continuous gate scratch on the original 16mm film. A small emulsion error in the original master also appears in the corner of the frame, later in the concert.

On a technical basis the transfer looks perfect without a hint of artifacting, revealing every limitation and nuance of the source material. The AVC encode consistently runs at very high bitrates, most of the time in the thirties. I would estimate an average video bitrate of 31 Mbps, which allows the fuzzy film shot in questionable lighting conditions to reveal its full resolution on Blu-ray. The image has a low-contrast appearance that is soft and has moments of poor focus. The black levels have some minor exposure problems, revealing a bit of noise. This is not a transfer with remarkable shadow detail, or even average detail, but looks on par with other concert footage I have viewed from the period. The Woodstock documentary on Blu-ray has similar picture quality. Tiny white specks that look like flash bulbs do pepper the image from time to time. It rarely becomes a distraction though.

The picture quality is tolerable enough to enjoy the real benefit of this BD release, the uncompressed high-resolution stereo PCM track at 24-bit/96 kHz and the lossless 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Both are simply spellbinding and really the only way one should listen to this material. Mastering engineer Mark Wilder has done an outstanding job. The music shows absolutely no signs of limiting or compression, and reproduces without fault this live audio document. I wish most music releases were mastered this carefully. There is not a hint of thinness to the sound, and the fidelity is surprisingly great for a project of this nature. At times the songs approach the quality of the studio versions in dynamics and clarity. The producer did not attempt to cover up any deficits in the original recording though. A few microphone pops occur and occasionally instruments bleed into other channels. The audience is barely audible most of the time except during the musical interludes. With both SACD and DVD-Audio being commercially irrelevant for the major music labels, this disc is the best fidelity we will ever see this music presented in a commercial medium.

A lot of care and thought has gone into the packaging and presentation of this release. Included is a 16-page booklet that has wonderful photographs and top-notch liner notes by Sylvie Simmons. The booklet reproduces the same content of the booklet included in the CD/DVD release, but in a much larger format that is easier to read and enjoy. It really makes the numerous archival photographs easier to appreciate. It is rare to see such entertaining and insightful liner notes that significantly add to the product, but that is plainly the case here. Aside from a menu, there are no extras on the disc itself.

Currently this BD is an exclusive title at the Internet retailer Amazon. Fans of Leonard Cohen need to go out and pick this item up immediately. The concert is a window to a much younger looking-and-sounding Leonard Cohen. The sound quality alone is enough reason to buy it, for Cohen truly invests emotion and vigor into the performance that puts a new spin on songs for fans only familiar with the album versions. His vocal inflection adds a bit of emotional weariness to “The Partisan” for example that is simply not there on the album version. The only lackluster performance is “Famous Blue Raincoat”, where it sounds as if Cohen’s voice grows fatigued. The backing musicians all give splendid accompaniment to the music, though the camera rarely shows them aside from the two comely female singers at Cohen’s side.

This is a wonderfully sentimental depiction of public school life in the Victorian and Edwardian eras and beyond. Chipping, like so many other schoolmasters of the time, lives a cloistered life on which the outer world only occasionally impinges — mostly during wartime.

In the film, he ventures out on only one other memorable occasion — a holiday with the school German teacher to the Tyrol where he meets the handsome Greer Garson (in her first movie appearance), who somewhat improbably falls for him. This sets off a chain of sentimental events: marriage, introductions to the common room, tea with the boys, her death through childbirth, and a never-ending cycle of Colleys (played by the same actor, but with a slightly different haircut for each generation). The school hymn is also designed to pluck the heart stings.

The movie was actually filmed at Repton. I went to a similarly confined, all-boys, English public school, set in a country town miles from anywhere else, though somewhat more recently than the Chips era. Many of the masters never married because it was so difficult for them to meet any women. We still had corporal punishment — which Chips continues to inflict even when brought out of retirement to become head during World War One. This film does not reflect the grubby reality of public school life — the author must have had his rose-tinted spectacles on when he wrote this — but it’s hard not to be moved by it.

I have special memories of first seeing this at the age of 12 in our headmaster’s study, together with all the other senior boys at the prep school. Today, its meaning for me is more about staying in the same place for a long time, while all about you moves on. (I’ve recently completed 25 years with the same employer!) I also enjoyed trying to work out how many of the Tyrol scenes were shot in the studio. (At one stage, Chips and his friend even walk against a film background.)

The DVD has no special extras, but the picture and sound quality is reasonable. I haven’t tried the film on my teenage children, but I think this is one of the few black and white movies that they would be absorbed by. (Don’t be misled by the colour photo on the DVD box cover into believing the movie is in colour!)

There aren’t many cases where the movie is better than the book, but “Goodbye Mr. Chips” is one of them. James Hilton tossed together his barely over 100 pages of big type in about a week. The scriptwriters for the film fleshed out a good story line with much more detail. Well-directed and just superbly acted by Robert Donat in the title role, this film is an endearing classic.

The basic story is that of a traditional English schoolmaster, set in a period from mid-Victorian to pre-WWII. It’s a gentle tale of the meaning of a man’s life and how we can rise to excellence in our modest professions and touch the lives of many. Mr. Chipping (”Chips” as his students affectionately know him) leads a rich life, although also fraught with sorrows.

There is still much relevance to the film–the tragedy of war, the importance of a balanced education, and the evils of caste.

Yes, the film is sentimental and a little manipulative, but you will probably not mind. In fact, you may cry your eyes out.

Compared to R.F. Delderfield’s “To Serve Them All My Days,” the book of “Chips” is not nearly as good, but this film tops the BBC mini-series of “Days” in virtually every way–especially in managing to leave out a lot of class warfare!

Order it, go buy a box of Puffs, and plonk yourself down for a delightful classic!

Save your money, Godzilla fans. This is a mediocre DVD effort by Universal. The print is a nice copy, and it looks good. That’s the only positives I’ll give it. I’ve been spoiled by the wonderful Toho Master Collection releases by Classic Media over the last few years. Those movies include both the original Japanese version and the American theatrical release, along with some interesting still galleries, trailers, and insightful commentaries.

This DVD only includes the American version, which is hugely disappointing. Even worse, this is a no-frills DVD. No special features, no expert commentary, no nothing. The menu is “Watch Movie” “Languages” and “Scene Selections”. Nothing else. I pre-ordered this one on the hopes that perhaps it was mis-labeled at Amazon. Sadly, it isn’t.

I would have gladly paid a few extra dollars for a decent DVD of this film which included all the aforementioned content. Only buy this one if you really, really want a nice looking DVD copy of the American version and nothing else.

This is the one most of us grew up on and have a great affection for. Godzilla looks good. King Kong looks terrible. But they both kick ass. There seems to be a misconception that the Japanese version is more sophisticated than this version. Trust me it isn’t. It’s different, but not better. In fact sometimes it plays off more comical than this version. The Japanese ending is not any different, other than Godzilla gets the closing roar. The ending is a matter of perspective. Kong swam away in victory because he’s the hero and had Godzilla on the ropes before they fell into the water. Kong swam away in retreat because he couldn’t stay underwater indefinitely like Godzilla can. What many people don’t know is there is a third version. The Japanese print with english dubbing done by a different studio. That one is really hard to find.
